Stuck

Why capable men get stuck.

Your life works on paper, and you have stopped expecting anything from it.

01 / The signs

Nothing is wrong. Nothing moves.

  1. You train on the weeks you feel like it.
  2. Boredom lasts a minute, then the phone comes out.
  3. The move at work has waited a year.
  4. You rewrite a message to a woman until it says nothing.

None of it looks like a crisis, so nobody treats it as one, least of all you.

02 / The cause

Men suffer when their actions do not reliably alter the world.

The bottleneck for most guys is almost always agency. You can name what to do. The gap sits between intention and execution, and it widens every time you leave it open.

From the inside, that gap feels like apathy: Sunday evenings spent planning a week you already know you will not run.

Then the world rewards it. Predictable men are easy to employ, insure, price and govern. Your employer, your insurer and most of your friends prefer you as you are.

Maturity is the name given to a man who can no longer change. Give it ten years and the brain finishes the job, closing and locking itself around whoever you happened to be at 25.

03 / The usual fix

Try harder.

The standard prescription is a stricter routine. A cold plunge, a dopamine fast, a podcast at 5am, a blood panel. (Some are useful. I would not build a man on any of them.)

Each one asks the same locked man to try harder, and he does, for about three weeks.

Why does it fade? Because a routine borrows the old man's willpower, and willpower is the thing he ran out of.

04 / The method

A man defines himself by what he chooses to enact.

Identity is usually treated as a discovery. Construction is the more accurate model.

Open.

Break the lock on who you are.

Imprint.

Act as the man you chose. Feelings and good intentions imprint nothing.

Close.

Set the new form. Live in it until it too needs breaking.
